Kdrama (Korean Drama) Addiction Happens!

Within the last few months I’ve developed an addiction. It is called KDRAMA fever! A little know vice outside of the kdrama lovers community. Yes, there are others like me. I don’t watch alone. Whew. I was watching anime on various sites out of winter boredom in 2011 and stumbled across the fact that there were a few live drama shows based on anime/manga. The anime “Skip Beat” about the music entertainment industry lead me to a Taiwanese live drama version called “Extravagant Challenge” starring Ivy Chen and Choi Siwon, who I discovered later is this BIG Kpop star with the Korean music group, “Super Junior M”. Next I watched an anime called Hana Yori Dango, which dealt with the angst of high school, until I couldn’t find any more episodes online. Since I was at a cliffhanger I decided to watch the live drama version called, “Boys Over Flowers”. Apparently this anime is so popular that it spawned a Japanese, then Chinese, and finally a Korean version. Viewers agreed hands down that the Korean version was the most view worthy mainly because of the “eye candy” and the acting. I would later learn that this “eye candy” had a name “F4”. F4 would leave an indelible mark on my viewing psyche forever.

BOF, as it’s nicknamed, changed my viewing habits probably forever. This series was so fantastically good I felt like I’d been eating garbage before discovering gourmet food. I talked endlessly to my husband about each character and what they were going through in each episode like they were family members. I’m not sure what my husband thought of this. I decided to research what it was that grabbed me with this genre. I had no idea at the time that there was a whole industry in Korea which was churning out great dramatic stories called “kdrama” but also actors referred to as “Hallyu” stars and picture perfect, well trained “boy and girl bands” called “kpop” artists. Who knew? I’d discovered a whole new world outside of my universal sphere. WOW! Somehow on Twitter I also accidentally stumbled across the hashtag #kdrama. Thank goodness. I am now able to interact with fellow Kdrama aficionados like myself and spare my poor husband. At my new kdrama friends’ suggestion here is my list: *TW- Taiwanese *K- Korean
